1. Gloria and Robbie are like bestfriends they play games together and that seems to be the relationship they have.

2.Mrs.Weston feels that a child should not grow up with a robot as a friend and that it will effect her socially , also she wants to fit in and the other parents dont like for their children to go to their house because of robbie.

3.She is devaststed andwants to find him.Its her bestfriend and she feels she has just lost an important person in her life.

4.Mrs.Weston even decided to take a small vacation to New York so Gloria can live in a different environment that doesnt remind her of Robbie. She also tries to fill in the time that she wouild normallly spend with robbie with other activities.

5.The family went to a robotics museum and the father set it up for Gloria to "find" Robbie there when she strayed away.

1.Robbie and Gloria have an excellent relationship, they are good friends and Robbie is also her nurse maid.
2.Mrs. Weston does not like Robbie because she feels he is dangerous and it is causing her to be seen in the wrong light by her friends.
3.When Robbie is taken away she becomes deeply depressed and nothing can cheer her up besides finding her friend.
4.She moves her into a city to try to spark another interest, but Gloria thinks its so they can find Robbie. Also she gives her everything and takes her everywhere but Robbie is still in her heart.
5.Mr. Weston comes up with the idea to take her to a Robot facility to show Gloria that Robots are just machines and not humans, but in a factory she sees Robbie and is unaware to the fact of a tractor coming directly for her but, Robbie saves her.

1. The relationship between Gloria and Robbie is that they are friends but she is human and he is robot.
2.Mrs.Weston doesnt like Robbie because she feels that he spends to much time with her daughter and doesnt give her a chance to play with normal kids her own age.
3.When Robbie is removed from Gloria she acts like she feels that she has lost her best friend and that she just has to find him or she just acnt function correctly.
4.The measures she take is getting a dog taking her to the city and trying to give her what she wants. These measures dont succeed because she has been with robbie for so long she feels very lost with out him.
5.The incedent that reunites Gloria to Robbie is when her parents try to make gloria see that Robbie was just a machine and she see Robbie at the plant and goes to be with him and tell how much she missed him.

1.) The relationship between Robbie and Gloria is a brother/sister relationship or a best friend.
2.) Mrs. Weston doesn't want Robbie around Gloria because she believes it is wrong for a human child to be raised by a robot.
3.) Gloria begins to shrink slowly away from her family then the world.
4.) Mrs. Weston first buys her a dog, then moves to the city, take her to malls, sight-seeing. These do not succeed because Gloria is still hurt over Robbie.
5.) Gloria sees Robbie at the factory working, she calls him and runs to him, as she is running a tractor is coming towards her direction, Robbie runs full speed to catch Gloria before the tractor destroys her, then he hugs her.

Japanese robots enter daily life
usatoday.com

In japan robots are already taken for granted especially in japanese factories.Robots are used as receptionist, janitorial duties, feeding the elderly ,and serving tea. Most of the Japanese population is 65 and older and robots are their main care givers.Robots are portrayed as friendly helpers in Japanese culture. The Japanese has even come up with robots that have emotions and even relegions which may seem creepy to one culture but not to theirs. Many Japanese are still not certain if they want trobots running around their homes and tending to their daily chores.

1.The relationship between Gloria and Robbie almost seem like they are best friends. They play together, they're always by each other, and almost everything that Gloria does involves Robbie.

2. Mrs. Weston doesn't like Robbie because she thinks that Robbie creates a vital distraction to Gloria. Mrs. Weston feels that Gloria should grow up to take care of herself.

3. When Robbie is removed from Gloria, Gloria is devastated about Robbie not coming back and she cries and does less talking.

4. The measures that Mrs. Weston takes with Gloria to make her forget about Robbie is to take a trip to New York City. Mrs. Weston wants Gloria to do fun activities and learn stuff without Robbie.

5. The father of Gloria set Gloria up to find Robbie while Gloria walked away in the robotics museum.

The Ternsted Unimate
The first robot was created in 1961 at the General Motors plant in Ewing Township in the spring. It was an automated die-casting mold that dropped red-hot car parts inhto cooling liquid. The "Father of Robotics" Joseph F. Engelberger was the creator and the japanese seized his idea. When Engelberger broughtbthe die-caster to the plant 3,000 men and women were let go. And in the end by 1983 he had so much success his machince was worth 107 million. Today he is 73 and his buisness is doing very well.

This article by John Roach provides info on the study of Ross King at Wales University. They're creating a Robot scientist the many have high hopes for. It is being programmed to do gene research and completed a task of figuring out the functions of bakers yeast genes. The robot likely won't replace humans in the field but can help with the sorting of gene analysis data.

A person working in the field dealing with robotics is a roboticist. Basically there job or their field is to make machines work for the efficiency of mankind. The machines that are built vary in appearance and their use. Some robots are designed to have similar characteristics as a human. Making a robot requires time and effort because it's a slow process. However the time and effort the roboticist put into these machines, eventually builds to make something more efficient.

In this article they describe a robot which is used to grasp and grapple many objects that regular robot arms can't do. This robot was developed by US researchers through a project called Octor and is funded by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Most robots rely on mechanical gripping jaws that have difficulty grabbing large or irregular shapes.

1)the relationship between gloria and robbie is that gloria sees robbie as a human and a best friend and that is basically the same way that robbie sees gloria.
2)Mrs. Weston doesn't like robbie because she believes that her daughter is to attached and that gloria spends more time with a robot then with people. she feels that in the future her daughter will not be very socially active with people.
3)when robbie was taken away, gloria cry until she couldn't cry anymore, then she stopped eating and eventually atopped talking.
4)Mrs. weston buys glloria a dog but gloria saw it as being a nasty creature, then mrs. weston took the family to new york but gloria saw it as a new way to find robbie and not a new way to make human friends.
5)gloria and robbie were reunited because mr. weston had set up a meeting with someone at US robots and engineering so that gloria could see robbie but during the process of her realizing she was looking at robbie, she had started running toward him and was almost ran over by a giant tractor except robbie saved her life.

1. Well the relationship between Gloria and Robbie is that they are close friends or as you would call it best friends.

2.Well Mrs.Weston does not like Robbie because she feels that Gloria shouldn't be playing with a robot over children. She also do not trust him because she feels that its strange for a robot to be so close to a child.

3. When Robbie was removed from Gloria she started to cry they for the next couple of weeks she had no expression on her face. She didn't even talk.

4. When her perents did things to take her mind off of Robbie she thought the were trying to help find Robbie. For instance when they went to New York And toured the Plant that built robots. They weren't a success because everytime she saw something metal or in the shape of a robot her attention shifted to that thing.

5. Well when her dad had schedualed a trip to the plant where robots are made Gloria saw a robot that looked like Robbie. As a matter of fact it was Robbie. So sh started running after him and came into the path of a tractor headed her way. So Robbie ran after her, picked her up and moved her out of the tractors way.

Unknown said...

1. Gloria and Robbie are as close to best friends as best friends can get. Gloria sees Robbie as the most important "person" in her life.

2. To Mrs. Weston's dismay, Robbie is the only social influence on Gloria. because Robbie is around Gloria doesn't spend any time with kids her age. Mrs. Weston feels that this is unnatural and that it will make socializing difficult for Gloria when she's older.

3. She becomes depressed and extremly unhappy. She isolates herself and feels that one day she'll find Robbie.

4. At first, she thinks that time will help Gloria understand. But when that fails her, she decides that taking a vacation to a different environment will allow her to forget about Robbie.

5. When the family went to the museum, Gloria's father planned for Gloria to find Robbie. But something went wrong, and Robbie saved her from a deadly tractor colliusion.

HUMAN THOUGHTS CONTROL NEW ROBOT
scientists have created a new way to control a robot through brainwave signals. it works by a person wearing a cap with electrodes that mimick a persons reactions into instructions. the robot can only move to an indicated object or location. the person sits in front of a computer screen and whatever the robot sees, it sends to the computer and depending on the reaction the person has to one of the objects, the computer sends to the robot that the object is the choice object. so the robot then picks it up. the same applys when comes to moving a robot to certain location.

NEW SKIN LETS ROBOTS GET SENSITIVE:

New technology allows robots to feel and react to other objects. Today's modern science allows robots to move pretty well independently. However, when obsticles get in their way problems arise. New robot "skin" lets robots sense object and analyze how to deal with them (reactions). The skin is made up of flexible plastic covered with many thumbprint sized senors enbedded over it's surface. this could be a big step to more touchy-feely robots.

There's a reason that Asimo is the most famous robot in the world. And just like his contemporaries in the tabloids (here's looking at you, Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag), it has little to do with talent. Honda's 4-ft. 3-in.-tall humanoid robot has rung the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange, met no less than four world leaders and, just last week—to just as much fanfare but just as little practical utility—conducted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Being famous, it seems, is precisely what Asimo was built to do.

Valued at somewhere under $1 million apiece, more than 40 Asimo models currently roam the theme-park stages, talk-show sets and corporate offices of the world. Asimo can run at up to 4 mph, recognize faces and voices with stereoscopic cameras and a trio of head-mounted microphones, and avoid crashing into its environment with an array of ultrasonic sensors. It can greet you, serve you a beverage from a tray, and escort you to the appropriate meeting room (provided you're wearing the appropriate smart card).

To be sure, Asimo is an incredibly sophisticated device, technologically speaking. And as a marketing tool, it's a sensation, guaranteeing a burst of news coverage with each publicity stunt. But other than stepping carefully into the spotlight every few months, what the hell does Asimo actually do? When the robot was fully unveiled in 2002, Honda hoped to eventually sell similar units as domestic servants. A robot that can walk up and down stairs, grasp objects and interact with humans seems like a perfect fit for elderly care. Six years later, Asimo still costs more than $100,000 to rent, has yet to make anyone's bed and represents just the latest in a series of disappointments for the future of household bots. So forget what Asimo can and cannot do: When will this robot get a job?

It's not that robots are ill-suited for real work, even today. While Asimo has been busy waving to children and appearing in car commercials, iRobot's Roomba has been invading homes by the millions, dutifully—and somewhat autonomously—cleaning up after its human masters. And lesser-known robots have proved their utility in life-and-death situations, helping to locate survivors buried under rubble, and more recently assisting with brain surgery.

The trouble with Asimo, or at least the reason it seems trapped in a neverending press tour, is its legs. For years, iRobot CEO Colin Angle has criticized humanoid robots, claiming during an address at the 2006 RoboBusiness conference that interest in walking robots had stunted the growth of a consumer robotics industry. Angle reiterated the relative uselessness of two-legged models during a roundtable discussion at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. And in the middle of his keynote presentation at RoboBusiness last month, Angle put it more bluntly: "Walking robots are silly."

iRobot has already demonstrated stair-climbing with its tracked tactical robots, such as the Packbot and the Warrior. Israeli robotics company Gallileo Mobility has developed a bot (which is being developed by the Israeli Army for use in urban operations) whose rubber-treaded wheels can change shape to better conform to stairs and other obstacles. In other words, if the most noble and profitable goal of domestic robotics is to help the elderly and disabled—Angle is among those that believe this might be the true "killer app" for consumer bots—then all of the work that's gone into maintaining Asimo's balance while walking, running and (naturally) dancing may end up essentially pointless.

Despite those miscalculations with Asimo, Toyota is banking on its own research into the future of two-legged robotic maids and nurses. The U.S.-assigned model in its group of so-called "partner robots" plays the trumpet while walking (a quartet of musical bots have shared the stage in Japan). Each partner bot has its own research focus and corresponding demonstration potential, be it wheeled mobility or, in the case of Toyota's tour-guide model, the kind of collision detection and verbal communication that Asimo has already demonstrated. But to help build public awareness, the trumpeter needs to put on a show, which is why it's equipped with an internal air compressor and a mouth that replicates human vibrations. "We don't see a market for instrument-playing robots," says Goss, external affairs manager at Toyota's manufacturing office. "It's a way to demonstrate the research we're doing into different kinds of movements and actions."

Toyota plans to sell a wider range of caretaker robots in the next decade, hoping to cover the field of mobility with new models that can walk or roll. As the era of robotic elder care marches closer—slowly, but inexorably—it's hard to imagine humanoid models like Asimo ever becoming cheap enough for widespread adoption. Indeed, the mascot will likely never become the maid. Fortunately for Asimo—and maybe less fortunately for the rest of us—there's always a place in the world for shameless self-promotion, be it human, robotic or some useless approximation of both.

Researching the term Robotics I noticed that something that basically started in 350 B.C. “the pigeon” has emerged into something so wide spread that even high school students are creating some of the most interesting robots. The article that I read was based upon Grady High school’s own Robotics team. Starting as a rookie team beginning in 2005 this team was able to create a unique invention that won the Most Innovative Design Award. Students my age created a robot that was capable of taking down drenched and waterless laundry. That award was truly an accomplishment for both the team and the school. Being in Odyssey right now and creating a robot shows me that if they can do so can I, for we are creating history!

Robots now can run like a human. This robot can walk on two wheels like a human. The robot that can do it is called Rabbit. Rabbit has a waist, two hip joints and two knees, but no upper body or feet or ankles. This feet are wheels. He can walk at a speed of 12 kilometers per hour.He is now trying to get programmed how to run.

1. Robbie and Gloria have a great relationship. They are like so insync with each other. They do everything together. They play games, talk, and enjoy each others company. He is suppose to be just her nurse maid but turns out to be her very best friend.

2.Mrs. weston doesn't like robbie because she believes he isn't an appropriate friend for her little girl to have. She thinks this because gloria spends most of her time with robbie and not enough time socializing with the other neighborhood children.

3.When robbie is removed from gloria she isn't the same loving joyful child anymore. She in a way becomes depressed. She is no longer happy and the dog that she recieved in place of robbie she hates it so much. so mush even that he mom had to take it back to the store where she bought it.

4.She decides its time to move away to a place where gloria will not be reminded of robbie. But gloria thinks that the only reason that they are going to new york is for her to find robbie.

5.gloria and robbie reunite when she and her parents go to the robot musuem and her father had it arranged so that gloria could automatically pick out robbie.

Human Thoughts Control New RobotBy Sara Goudarzi, LiveScience Staff Writer

This article talked about how scientist have created a way to cotrol a robot with identifying signals from the human brain.By generating the proper brainwaves—picked up that sense the signals and reflect a person's instructions, scientists can instruct the robot to move to specific locations and pick up certain objects. Finding this out makes me want to try this one day.

Robbie
1. What is the relationship between Gloria and Robbie?
Gloria and Robbie are friends.

2. Why doesn't Mrs. Weston like Robbie?
She sees him as just a robot and thinks children should not have them as friends.

3. When Robbie is removed from Gloria, how does she react?
Gloria reaction is she devasted because she has lost her best friend.

4A) What measures does Mrs. Weston take to make Gloria forget about Robbie?
Mrs. Weston decided to take Gloria to New York.
B)Why don't these measures succeed?
because Gloria just couldn't get her mind off Robbie.

5 . Describe the incident that reunites Gloria and Robbie.

When the family went to the museum, Gloria's father planned for her to find Robbie. Gloria see Robbie working at a factory, calls, and run to him. A tractor is coming towards her direction. Then, Robbie runs full speed to catch Gloria before the tractor kills her.

Robots are used in almost any industry where repetitive tasks are involved, or the task is difficult manually, or dangerous, such as welding, painting, or surface finishing in the aerospace or automotive industries.

Robots usually have joints to position the tool and joints to orient the tool. Gross positioning is accomplished by the inner (primal) joints, while orientation is accomplished by the outer (distal) joints.

Advantages
Greater flexibility,reprogrammability, adjustable kinematic dexterity
Greater response time to inputs than humans
Improved product quality
Maximize capital intensive equipment in multiple work shifts
Reduction of hazardous exposure for human workers

Disadvantages

Replacement of human labor
More unemployment
Significant retraining costs for both unemployed and users of new technology
Advertised technology does not always disclose some of the hidden disadvantages
Hidden costs because of the associated technology that must be purchased and integrated into a functioning cell. Typically, a functioning cell will cost 3 - 10 times the cost of the robot.
Limitations

Assembly dexterity does not match that of human beings, particularly where eye-hand coordination required.
Payload to robot weight ratio is poor, often less than 5%.
Robot structural configurations often constrain joint limits and thus the the work volume.
Work volumes can be constrained even further when parts of substantial size are picked up or when tooling/sensors added to the robot.
The robot repeatability and/or accuracy can constrain the range of potential applications.
The closed architectures of most modern robot control systems make it difficult to configure the robot in automated cells where a variety of devices have to be integrated.

I.Gloria sees Robbie as her best friend.
II.She thinks he is a terrible machine. She wants Gloria togrow like a "normal" child and play with kids.
III.Gloria is devastated. She is affected so bad that it effects her health.
IV.Her mother decides to go to NYC. It doesn't work b/c Gloria thinks they're going to look for Robbie.
V.Mr. Weston suggest they go to the robot factory to show Gloria that Robbie is no more than a machine. While on the tour Gloria spots Robbie in the factory.

1. Gloria and Robbie are best friends.

2. Mrs.Weston does not like Robbie because she feels that Gloria shouldn't be playing with a robot instead of children. She also does not trust him because she feels that its strange for a robot to be so close to a child.

3. Robbie was removed from Gloria when she started to cry there for the next couple of weeks she had no expression on her face. She didn't even talk.

4. Her perents did things to take her mind off of Robbie and she thought they were trying to help find Robbie. For instance when they went to New York and toured the Plant that built robots, they weren't a success because everytime she saw something metal or in the shape of a robot her attention shifted to that thing.

5. Her dad had scheduled a trip to the plant where robots are made Gloria saw a robot that looked like Robbie. As a matter of fact it was Robbie. So sh started running after him and came into the path of a tractor headed her way. So Robbie ran after her, picked her up and moved her out of the tractors way

4.Mrs. Weston decided to buy Gloria a colie. This does not work because the child became very depressed after finding out that Robbie was gone.
5.The family took a tour in the robot factory to proved Robots are just metal, steel, and copper and they saw Robbie there.

1. What is the relationship between Gloria and Robbie?
- He is Gloria's best freind.
2. Why doesn't Mrs. Weston like Robbie?
-Because he is the only one Gloria will play with. Gloria doesn't act like a normal child to her.
3. When Robbie is removed from Gloria, how does she react?
-She begins to cry. She is very sad because at first she thinks Robbie is in the basement and he is not there. It really did hurt her.
4. What measures does Mrs. Weston take to make Gloria forget about Robbie? Why don't these measures succeed?
-She tries to keep Gloria very busy and she evens moves to New York and tries to find things that make Gloria realize Robbie was just a robot. This method doesn't succeed because Gloria believes that everything they are doing is to find Robbie and plus her dad sets up for her a way to find him by tricking the mother.
5. Describe the incident that reunites Gloria and Robbie.
-This incident was when her dad set up a trip for them to go to U.S. Robotics and Mechanical Men by making the mother think that this would teach Gloria that Robbie is just a robot when actually he puts Robbie in a position for Gloria to find him.

Robotics
Wikipedia.com

Robots may seem to be the ultimate body of artificial machine systems.
The report, Robotics and Cognition, fills a gap in the original series of Research Reviews. While those reviews did indeed cover many of the underlying research themes of robotics, they did not address the issues involved in bringing together work on, for example, sensors and users interfaces.
Like the disciplines involved in the earlier stages of the project, robotics researchers also wanted to see where they could benefit from a more structured dialogue with the life sciences.
Research in robotics can also teach us something about how natural cognitive systems, including humans, function. For example, several research groups experiment build "artificial insects" to investigate robots as biological models.

Robot Scientist
This article is by John Roach. He provides info on the study of Ross King at Wales University. They are creating a Robot scientistand they may have high hopes for it. It is being programmed to do gene research and complete a task of figuring out the functions of bakers yeast genes. The robot won't replace humans in the field, but can help with the sorting of gene analysis data.

1)Gloria and Robbie were best friends who played alot with each other and their bonding relationship was real tight.
2)Mrs.Wenston doesn't like robbie because she wanted Gloria to grow up like a normal child without a robot for a friend and because the townpeople are suspicious of it.
3)Gloria doesn't talk, eat, or smile anymore because she misses her robot robbie and she wants to see him again.
4)Mr.Weston and his wife has decided to take their daughter on a trip to New York so they make her forget about robbie by going to tourist sites. It works because she's happy at first about going to New York but, it didn't work because everything remided Gloria of Robbie.
5)Gloria dad set up a tour with the president of U.S. Robots so Gloria and Robbie can meet in a ironic situation.

Robots are primarily concerned with generating specific motion of the robot joints, simultaneously allowing tooling or sensors to perform certain functions, either when the arm is moving or at specific operational configurations. The arm and attached tooling may perform the operations themselves (such as painting) or carry parts to other devices which perform the operations.

Newer technologies are concerned with robot interactions with parts such that interaction forces and torques can be controlled. This technology will permit more robot applications in assembly, which promises to be a growing application arena for robotics.

Humanoid Robots

Humanoid robots are robots that are designed to work in the home and in close reletionships with humans. Such as Robbie in I, Robot.
These humanoid robots also are good for manufactoring in factories.I think the idea of humanoid robots is interesting , yet stupid. We should'nt build beings smarter than ourselves.

The robot article that i found was about a robot used to help with surgery on a morbitly obess. "we attempted to determine whether incorporation of its use into traditional laparoscopic gastric bypass would duplicate or improve the success of the operation without increasing complications." This is what one of the testers had to say.The web site was http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/sls/jsls/2005/00000009/00000003/art00005.I found that the robot was very useful of the surgery.

The first company to produce an industrial robot was Unimation, founded by Joseph F. Engelberger in 1962, with the basic inventions of George Devol.
They used hydraulic actuators and were programmed in joint coordinates, i.e. the angles of the various joints were stored during a teaching phase and replayed in operation.

Walking Robots:

Robots have been made that can walk reliably but none of them are as robust as humans. Hopping robots have been made in the 1980's. They worked like pogo sticks. The most promise for walking robots is dynamics, when the robot swings its momentum between limbs. There is much hope for walking robots that move smoothly

Could Robots Become Your Toddler's New Best Friend?

http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=could-robots-become-your&ref=rss

Researchers found that a two-foot- tall metal man easily won over a classroom of todlers aged 18 to 24 months, who intermittently spent time with it over a five-month period. The kids began to increasingly interact with the robot and treat it more like a peer than an object during the first 11 sessions. The signs that showed that progress was this..."The only time they deviated from this behavior was when QRIO was programmed to giggle, at which point they frequently petted its face and head. Another indication that the little humans viewed robo-kid as a compeer was the way they reacted when QRIO ran out of juice and lay down as if to take a nap: Some of the children would try to wake and help it up, whereas others would cover it with a blanket."

Toyota tunes up violin-playing robot

The president of Toyota, Katsuaki Watanabe wants robotics to be the core of the succcess of the company. He hopes to put what it calls "partner robots" to real use by 2010.They started off with robots that roll around to work as guides and have fingers advanced enough to play the trumpet and the violin. The robots that play the violin are five-foot-tall.It uses its mechanical fingers to press the correct strings and controlled the bow with its other arm.It had total controll coordinating the movements well."We want to create robots that are useful for people in everyday life" This was also stated by the president of toyota and they are hoping to test these new robots out in hostpitals and toyota facilities.
